Enjoy a day of delighting in letterpress, setting metal type and printing on table-top Adana presses.
Date: 22nd June 2019
Suitability: Beginners (Level 1)
Letterpress: Before the age of computers and modern printing techniques the world relied on the letterpress for all kinds of publications and is considered by many to be one of the most important inventions of all time.
Letterpress printing uses metal or wooden moveable type which is inked by hand or by the press, before paper or fabric is pressed on a printing press into it, to create a beautiful impression.
Today, letterpress is predominantly being used to create art, stationery and gifts; and its popularity is increasing due to the charm and individuality that can be achieved.
Tutor: Elizabeth Willow
Workshop: This workshop will provide you with the opportunity to experience letterpress. You will be taught the basics of composition so that you can compose letters to form a series of words that you will then get to print on one of our Adana 8x5 table top printing presses, which are over 60 years old and in outstanding condition following their restoration.
During the day you will get a tour around the studio and the collection of printing presses and casters within the heritage room, some of which date back to the late 1800s. The day will end with the chance to use one of the larger presses to print and take home a large print, which will have been composed at the studio by one of our experienced tutors.
We look forward to sharing the unique joys of letterpress printing with those who attend.
Time: The workshop starts at 10:30am prompt and will finish at 4:30pm.
